Self Assessment Essay
Through this class I managed to brainstorm various skills along with being able to work with amazing teachers. One of those skills that I was able to obtain was to learn the valuable importance of what language holds to all of us. This helped me better recognize the role of language attitudes and how to be more open minded when it comes to other languages and cultures. One thing I enjoyed doing during this class that helped me expand my knowledge in analyzing writing and reading from a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. This was doing discussion boards. This activity helped me break down and further understand the purpose of the writing and the author’s reasoning. We used a method called “rhetorical presti” . This is where we gather information about the author which helped us break down the reasoning on the article we were reading or the video we watched. Some examples where we used this rhetorical presti was when reading Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. This class has also helped me improve my writing skills. One way this was imposed during this semester was being able to revise my own work, this is very helpful for me, so i can say it was for any class mates taking this course with me, being able to revise our work along with obtaining feedback on our essays and assignments helped me develop strategies in editing and revising my work and others work. We all collaborated as a class and helped each other improve our work. Along with being able to look back on our assignments we learned rhetorical terms and strategies when being engaged with rhetorical situations, one of these strategies was the use of “pathos, ethos, and logos”. This strategy helped me identify the author’s writing tone and situation towards a specific situation in their writing. It also managed to help us understand why those tones were specifically chosen in their writing. As a class we all connected in collaborative and social aspects of the writing process, we broke down into groups to answer class questions and in our peer reviews we advised each other to better fix our essay. We also had group assignments, one of them being the facilitation project where we made a class lesson to teach/inform the whole class for the day. There were various things that this class introduced me to and helped me polish , one of them which I feel like I’ll use even outside school is digital technology. Before coming to this class I thought creating a website would be rocket science but this exact paper I’m writing at this moment will be part of my “digital portfolio” . This is my website where I organize myself with all my work, essays, and assignments given to me. Everything is just in one whole website which is easily accessible to my teacher and anyone who wants to access my work. This is something valuable that I am thankful for as I can now create a website for anything. And this is something good for me personally to say because I am not a computer person , but the teacher managed to make videos and explain thoroughly everything in a way that wasn’t hard to understand. Another computer related thing I was impressed to learn though this class was being introduced to locating research sources in the libraries database. I am currently using this strategy to do my “Research Project” where I need to find more articles and information that would support my thesis. Even though it’s still a little bit confusing for me it is so much better than running to google and finding non reliable information by searching the Libraries database. I’m guaranteed liable information to use. This class has also helped me refine something I already knew, like composing texts integrating my stance and using resources along the way, even though I knew these things this class helped me refine them to the best of my ability which is helpful for me to be able to perfect my avility. One thing I could say I need more practice with is being able to use citations, this is because I’m not used to doing citations. This is a new method that I was introduced to, so I’m not very familiar with it yet. Overall this class has been nothing but beneficial in every aspect of the way but something I found meaningful and the most helpful were the cover letters as this helped me understand my own progress throughout the semester and it was a way for me to get together and analyse my own process in these calls. I want to thank Molly for having the patience and care to help me along with all the other students achieve something from this class.
